Canada Council Walter Carsen Prize recognizes Canadian dance icon

Ottawa, August 28, 2012 – The internationally renowned dancer, choreographer and institution builder Menaka Thakkar is the 2012 winner of the Canada Council Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts. She has been bringing classical Indian dance to Canadians for 40 years andhas trained several generations of professional dancers who now enjoy thriving careers of their own.

“Menaka Thakkar is a major figure in the Canadian dance landscape,” said Robert Sirman, Canada Council for the Arts Director and CEO. “She has trained with some of the best in India and, for years, has made their teachings accessible to the mainstream in Canada. Her work has truly enriched our collective culture.”

The Walter Carsen Prize, administered and presented by the Canada Council for the Arts, recognizes the highest level of artistic excellence and distinguished career achievement by Canadian artists who have spent the major part of their career in Canada in dance, theatre or music. The award, valued this year at $ 30,000, was created through a generous donation of $1.1 million to the Canada Council by Toronto businessman and philanthropist Walter Carsen, O.C. Toronto Eaton Centre Urban Mic: call for musicians

 
Toronto, are you ready to rock the Urban Mic?

Toronto Eaton Centre launches music talent program with performance by Toronto’s Shi Wisdom

On Thursday, September 6, 2012, Toronto Eaton Centre will launch Urban Mic, a live music experience aimed at profiling the city’s wide range of musical talent. 

The kickoff event, taking place in the Urban Eatery, will feature a performance by Toronto’s Shi Wisdom. Shi’s soul, R&B and alternative influences bring a unique, soulfulness to her voice, most recently heard on Kardinal Official’s Mr. Parker.

Every Thursday evening following the launch will host musical talents from throughout Toronto and the GTA. Toronto Eaton Centre is calling on all artists, young and old, to come out and show Toronto what they’ve got.

Canadian Dance Assembly: Accepting Nomination​s for the I love dance/J’ai​me la danse Awards!

CDA members are invited to attend the I love dance / J’aime la danse Awards celebration in Ottawa! This exciting event will be held on Oct 21, 2012 in conjunction with CDA’s National Conference. The celebration invites dance professionals, enthusiasts, and political supporters to come together and recognize great achievement in Canadian dance. The event will feature interactive media installations, food and drinks, dance performances and the very first I love dance/J’aime la danse Awards – you won’t want to miss it!   

Do you know someone or an organization who deserves recognition for exceptional contribution to the dance ecology in the spirit of the I love dance campaign? CDA invites you to submit your nominations in all categories by Sept 14, 2012.
