“Menaka Thakkar is a major figure in the Canadian dance landscape,” said Robert Sirman, Canada Council for the Arts Director and CEO. “She has trained with some of the best in India and, for years, has made their teachings accessible to the mainstream in Canada. Her work has truly enriched our collective culture.”

The Walter Carsen Prize, administered and presented by the Canada Council for the Arts, recognizes the highest level of artistic excellence and distinguished career achievement by Canadian artists who have spent the major part of their career in Canada in dance, theatre or music. The award, valued this year at $ 30,000, was created through a generous donation of $1.1 million to the Canada Council by Toronto businessman and philanthropist Walter Carsen, O.C. Toronto, are you ready to rock the Urban Mic?

Toronto Eaton Centre launches music talent program with performance by Toronto’s Shi Wisdom

On Thursday, September 6, 2012, Toronto Eaton Centre will launch Urban Mic, a live music experience aimed at profiling the city’s wide range of musical talent.

The kickoff event, taking place in the Urban Eatery, will feature a performance by Toronto’s Shi Wisdom. Shi’s soul, R&B and alternative influences bring a unique, soulfulness to her voice, most recently heard on Kardinal Official’s Mr. Parker.

Every Thursday evening following the launch will host musical talents from throughout Toronto and the GTA. Toronto Eaton Centre is calling on all artists, young and old, to come out and show Toronto what they’ve got.
