Join the Director of Parting Memories and co-editor of Acting Together: Performance and the Creative Transformation of Conflict, Roberto Gutiérrez Varela, for a candid conversation.

Roberto Gutiérrez Varea began his career in theatre in his native Argentina. His research and creative work focuses on live performance as means of resistance and peacebuilding, in the context of social conflict and state violence. Varea’s stage work in the United States has focused on Latino/Chicano theatre, and directing world or west-coast premieres of works by Migdalia Cruz, Ariel Dorfman, Cherrie Moraga, and Jose Rivera (among others). He is the founding artistic director of community-based performance groups Soapstone Theatre Company and El Teatro Jornalero!, and co-founder of the San Francisco-based collective Secos & Mojados. He is an associate editor of Peace Review (Routledge) and guest-listed the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics’ e-misferica. Varea is a founding faculty of the Performing Arts and Social Justice Program, and director of the Center for Latino Studies in the Americas (CELASA), at the University of San Francisco.

Last chance to register for Federico Restrepo’s workshop on Dance/Theatre/Puppetry

Only a few spots left for this magical workshop Monday to Friday, May 4-11 (10am-2pm). You begin the day with an intensive one-hour series of physical exercises designed to train the dancer/performer to isolate different parts of the body. Many of these exercises are derived from Pantomime. Next, the group gets divided into smaller groups and begins to work on improvisations without text with different puppets ranging from doll sizes to 15 feet tall. By the third day you will be adding text to the improvisations and will also commence to build your own puppet/character!

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from an experienced artist who brings many disciplines together into a seamless performance style.

More on crowd fundraising and why online donors are so special

My crowd sourcing post generated a flurry of comment and interest. And for good reason, according to this fascinating piece from NetWitsThinkTank. It says that while the majority of giving still comes from offline channels, online fundraising is becoming increasingly important for acquiring new donors. In fact, it’s the dominant giving channel for new donors 64 years old and younger, and an increasingly common way for new donors to give their first gift.

We’re testing this out right now in Toronto, by way of the Fringe’s charming and cheeky Lots of Little (LOL) Campaign. If you haven’t seen the Fringers’ penny packing video, watch it now. This campaign combines a creative and compelling ask, with a tight timeline and a matching incentive: TD Bank is matching up to $20,000 in donations to the Fringe Creation Lab until July 15th.

Measuring What Counts

What really happens when a young person experiences music, theatre or dance? Is it possible to understand and explain the transformative power the arts can have on people’s lives? Can we measure joy?

These questions will be tackled during our final PAEO workshop, Measuring What Counts, May 29th, 9:30 – 1:00 at CSI Spadina. (register by emailing paonearts@gmail.com). Like the previous workshops, this one will be firmly aimed towards collaborative action and problem solving.

We all know that the numbers – how many schools, how many students, how many workshops – don’t tell the story. But we also understand that we need to go beyond anecdotes and case studies to convince the unconvinced and, ideally, free up new resources and support. Read more

Nida Art Colony invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers to experience the Winter and Spring on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park, Lithuania.

Call for residency applications
Baltic-Nordic residencies October–December 2012 and international residencies January–May 2013

Nida Art Colony (NAC) welcomes proposals for its upcoming winter residencies. Two types of residencies are available. Residencies with grants will be offered to Baltic and Nordic artists for the term of October to December, 2012. The January to May 2013 term is open to all applicants.

The NAC is located in a remote and beautiful landscape. The residency is appropriate for those artists seeking time, solitude, and big studio or open-air space as well as for those who love coincidences and want to meet artists from all over the world in order to collaborate with them now or in the future. The Colony building also hosts student workshops and international artistic projects for shorter periods of time. The NAC is located in the small resort town of Nida.

The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable environment for the five artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 square meters of floor space and features all the necessary facilities.
