CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF), Sept. 14-21 @ The Royal Cinema, Toronto

In 2016, the CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF), returns to Downtown Toronto, at The Royal Cinema, 608 College Street, with an Opening Gala on September 7 at 5:30, then from September 14 – 21 at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

In an unconventional twist to this year’s theme of Caribbean Love, the opening night of CaribbeanTales International Film Festival will feature a crime drama/romance Diary of a Badman, (Jamaica/USA) directed by Diemiruaya Deniran and starring Jacinth Sutphin, (who is also the producer of the film), and Douglass A. Robbs. The Director and lead actors will be at the screening.

Trinbago-to-the-Bone (Sept 14, 6pm) celebrates performative cultural stories from Trinidad and Tobago, featuring carnival documentary Bottom in de Road.

Migrant Tales (Sept 14, 8:30pm), showcases different aspects of the Caribbean diasporic experience.

Love Thy Neighbour (Sept 15, 6pm) features award-winning Trinidadian drama Trafficked directed by Sean Hodgkinson.

LGBT Love (Sept 15, 8:30pm) features a documentary about Jamaica’s first pride, as well as other shorts exploring a range of LGBTQ representation.

Revolutionary Love (Sept 16, 6pm), focuses on ways in which commitment to change can alter both the intimate world and the global. It showcases five short documentaries created for Ryerson University as part of the Akua Benjamin Legacy Project.

#BlackLoveMatters (Sept 16, 8:30pm), explores themes of different forms of Caribbean and Black Love while featuring the best films from the #BlackLoveMatters Short Film Challenge.

Animated Love (Sept 17, 6pm) features the Francophone Caribbean’s first feature-length film Battledream Chronicle, a futuristic anti-colonial Sci-Fi.

Walk Good (Sept 17, 8:30pm), features documentary Dreadlock Story, which highlights different ideologies attached to the Jamaican dreadlocks hairstyle, its origins, its current state and its future.

On Sept 21 at 7pm, a special Grande Finale screening of Trinidadian musical/romance/drama Bazodee, starring Machel Montano.

Historically, fire is a meeting place for warmth, nourishment and ceremony for peoples across this land. It continues to function in many established Indigenous methodologies as a site of renewal and transformation. The 7th National Gathering of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective – Collectif des commissaires autochtones Kwä̀n Mày Dáyè Dàátthʼi: Sit by the Fire with Us –Ensemble autour du feu draws upon these ideas to examine how Indigenous artistic production and exhibition continue to transform and grow within our communities and among our membership.

“Sit by the Fire with Us” addresses issues that arise in the distance between communities, the idea of community, economic considerations in cultural production, the importance of inter-generational orality, and the idea of portable cultures. We will be honouring our elder artists and curators, makers and knowledge keepers. We will be listening to the words of young artists. We propose to develop discourse through Indigenous modes of exchange such as sharing circles, non-hierarchical round tables, community knowledge forums and witnessing.

The Aboriginal Curatorial Collective – Collectif des commissaires autochtones acknowledges the ancestral and traditional Territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council on whose land this gathering is taking place.

D’un point de vue historique, le feu est un lieu de rencontre où tous les peuples habitant ces terres venaient se réchauffer, s’alimenter et tenir quelque cérémonie. Plusieurs méthodologies autochtones établies le présentent encore comme un lieu de renouvellement et de transformation. Le 7e rassemblement national du Collectif des commissaires autochtones – Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, Kwä̀n Mày Dáyè Dàátthʼi : Sit by the Fire with Us – Ensemble autour du feu  s’inspirera de ces idées pour lancer discussions et  échanges  sur les façons dont la production et la diffusion de l’art autochtone continuent de se transformer et de croître au sein de nos communautés et parmi nos membres.

Ce rassemblement nous permettra d’examiner les enjeux qui naissent de la distance entre les collectivités et l’idée même de communauté, les facteurs économiques à l’œuvre dans la production culturelle, l’importance de l’oralité intergénérationnelle et le concept de « cultures portables ». Nous honorerons nos aînés, artistes, artisans ou gardiens du savoir. Nous serons à l’écoute des paroles de jeunes créateurs. Nous proposons d’élaborer un discours en faisant appel aux modèles d’échange autochtones, tels les cercles de partage, les tables rondes non hiérarchisées, les forums de savoir communautaires et les témoignages.

Le Collectif des commissaires autochtones – Aboriginal Curatorial Collective reconnaît le territoire sur lequel ce rassemblement aura lieu comme étant le territoire traditionnel de la Première nation des Kwanlin Dün et le Conseil des Ta’an Kwäch’än.
