$13.50/hr, 32 hours/week
8-week contract (July 3 to August 24, 2012)
The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is an artist-run production and educational media arts organization dedicated to celebrating excellence in the moving image. LIFT exists to provide support and encouragement for independent filmmakers and artists through affordable access to production, post-production and exhibition equipment; professional and creative development; workshops and courses; commissioning and exhibitions; artist-residencies; and a variety of other services. Founded in 1981 by a small collective, LIFT has since grown to become one of the foremost centres of its kind globally.
LIFT requires a highly organized film and digital video technician to join the LIFT staff and to work in cooperation with members. The summer technical assistant will work directly with our current technical coordinators on all aspects of LIFT’s equipment maintenance, rentals, expendable sales and supporting access to and understanding of the resources available at the centre. www.lift.ca
RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE A COMBINATION OF THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES:
– Maintenance and administration of film and video production equipment and post-production facilities
– Preparation of Regular 8, Super 8mm, 16mm and 35mm film and HD video camera packages, lighting and grip, location sound, exhibition equipment and other equipment for rental by LIFT members
– Assisting with the coordination of equipment for LIFT workshops
– Arranging orientations for LIFT members who wish to rent equipment and facilities
– Technical Support for digital and traditional film production and editing equipment
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
This position requires the ability to multitask and take on multiple responsibilities. LIFT has a very small number of staff providing services to over 500 members, visiting artists and artists in residence. LIFT staff may be called upon to assist in all aspects of the day-to-day operations.
The ideal candidate will have some or all of the following qualifications:
– Knowledge of the Macintosh platform
– Fluency in digital post-production software for video such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, ProTools, Motion, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
– Knowledge of database software (Filemaker Pro)
– Excellent knowledge of motion picture production requirements in all department
– Knowledge of: Super 8, 16mm, 35mm and HD cameras; knowledge of production lighting and grip gear; experience working with and understanding of projection equipment for Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm and video
– Knowledge of Oxberry Animation Cameras; Optical Printers; flatbed editing equipment; darkroom processes
– Experience working with interactive platforms such as Pure Data, MAX/MSP and Arduino is also an asset
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
– Between 18 and 30 years of age (inclusive)
– A full-time student in the previous academic year and returning to school full-time in the next academic year
– A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
– Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
– Does not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week)

TECHNICAL COORDINATOR
$17.00 per hour
32 hours / 4 days per week
Projected Start Date: As soon as possible
The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is a non-profit artist-run centre that provides affordable access to education, production equipment and post-production facilities. LIFT offers over 150 workshops and courses a year covering all elements of contemporary cinema production. LIFT provides information and networking resources to filmmakers and has several screenings, artist talks, and social events held throughout the year.
LIFT requires a highly organized film and digital technician to join the LIFT staff and to work in cooperation with members and the Board of Directors. The new technical staff person will work directly with our current Technical Coordinator on all aspects of LIFT’s equipment maintenance, rentals, supply sales and supporting members access to and understanding of our resources. All LIFT staff report to the Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE A COMBINATION OF THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL STAFF ACTIVITIES:
– Maintenance and administration of digital post-production suites and digital classrooms
– Maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs on film and video production equipment and traditional film post-production facilities
– Administration tasks related to the rental, maintenance, and purchase of film/video production and post-production equipment and facilities. Administration tasks related to LIFT’s general store
– Preparation of Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm film and HD video camera packages and other equipment for rental by LIFT members
– Assisting with the coordination of equipment for LIFT workshops and community programs
– Arranging orientations for LIFT members who wish to rent equipment and facilities
– Coordinating outsourcing of additional maintenance and repair of LIFT equipment
– Communications with LIFT members regarding equipment and facilities
– Technical support for digital and traditional film production and editing equipment
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
This position requires the ability to multitask and take on multiple responsibilities. LIFT has a very small number of staff providing services to over 600 members. LIFT staff may be called upon to assist in all aspects of the day-to-day operations.
The ideal candidate will have some or all of the following qualifications:
– Excellent knowledge of motion picture production requirements
– Knowledge of the Macintosh platform required, Windows skills a strong asset
– Fluency in Final Cut, Adobe Creative Suite, Avid and ProTools
– Knowledge of: 16mm cameras, including Bolex, Aaton XTR Prod Super 16, Arri SR II; 35mm cameras, including Arri III, BLIV, Konvas; HD cameras including Sony EX1 and F3; knowledge of production lighting and grip gear; experience working with and understanding of projection equipment for Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm and video
– Knowledge of Oxberry 16mm/35mm Animation Cameras; JK Optical Printer; Oxberry 1700 Optical Printer, Steenbeck and InterCine flatbed editing systems
– Knowledge of Arduino, Pure Data, Max/MSP and electronics general electronics
– Knowledge of audio equipment fo
r location and studio production
– Knowledge of darkroom maintenance and handprocessing of motion picture film
– Experience with construction, machining and gallery installation a strong asset
– Knowledge of database software (Filemaker Pro)
– Some prior experience teaching workshops or classes related to filmmaking
– Some prior administrative experience
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
– Excellent communication skills (with co-workers, LIFT members, and the public) are required for this position
– The ideal candidate is a self-directed team-worker, who is able to function in a very busy and hectic multitasking work environment
– The candidate should have a strong interest in the art of film and be committed to supporting independent filmmaking in all its forms
– Familiarity with LIFT is a definite asset
– A strong desire to work in a member-run media production centre is an asset
