Presented in partnership with Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA) in Winnipeg, this residency opportunity is open to woman-identified* SAVAC Member artists. Become a SAVAC Member for $30/year here.

The residency takes place in MAWA’s urban, loft-style apartment for a self-directed residency of 2-4 weeks in duration between January 1 & December 31, 2015. The selected artist will be granted use of this space free of charge, for research, reflection, networking and/or production.

The SAVAC-MAWA Residency Program is intended to increase dialogue between SAVAC’s membership and the Winnipeg arts scene, to create networking opportunities for women-identified artists, and to provide an opportunity for artists to move their artistic practices forward in a self-structured environment.

The MAWA apartment is fully furnished and includes a kitchen, a bathroom with shower, a queen bed, a double futon/couch and a designated parking space. All linens and cooking utensils are provided. The apartment is located on the second floor of 611 Main Street, in downtown Winnipeg. The apartment is a clean space that is not conducive for painting and many forms of sculpture.  Please note, it is a walk-up building and is not wheelchair accessible.

If the selected artist needs specific facilities outside of what is offered, MAWA staff will connect them to other Winnipeg art centres to assist in gaining access to spaces and resources as required. These could include a rough studio, printmaking, video and darkroom facilities, or introductions to like-minded artists and curators.

MAWA also asks that the selected artist present their work to MAWA members in a form of their choosing (screening, talk, performance, showcase of work-in-progress, etc.). The artist will be paid CAD$300 for this presentation.

Women-identified artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Equal consideration will be given to emerging and established artists.

To Apply

Applications must be received by email or post by 5 September 2014 at 5 pm, and should include:

• A cover letter explaining why you would like time in the MAWA apartment, articulating your goals and rationale (max. 500 words)

• A detailed description of what you will need while you are in Winnipeg, such as access to other facilities or equipment (max. 500 words)

• Your first and second choice of preferred dates, including start and end dates (between January 1 – December 31st, 2015)

• An artist’s CV (max. 3 pages)

• Up to 10 images as jpgs, 72 dpi at 1024 X 768 pixels, not embedded in a program such as PowerPoint.

• Up to two videos on playable DVD, in QuickTime or as a web link.

If applying online, please format your application so that the text documents are in one PDF file but the images are not embedded (individual jpg files, please).
