Indigenous Walks was launched in May 2014 and is an active, educational and fun way to learn about Indigenous Peoples’ experiences in Ottawa. This guided walk and talk provides a layer of knowledge of the Nation’s Capital through art, culture, history and landscape.

On the land of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Peoples called Turtle Island, this tour will guide participants through Indigenous social, political and cultural spaces. From the totem pole in Confederation Park to the Three Watchmen sculpture near Major’s Hill Park, you will get to know Ottawa like you have never known it before!

There are four different walks available including the Introductory Tour, Parliament Hill Tour, Indigenous Women Tour and the Very Scary Tour.

The Introductory tours begin at the Canadian Tribute to the Human Rights Monument in front of the Ottawa City Hall near Elgin/Lisgar.

Parliament Hill tours begin at the Centenial Flame on Parliament Hill.

The Very Scary Tour begins at the Aboriginal War Veteran’s Memorial on Elgin Street at Confedertaion Park.

The 43rd Annual Festival of India

The 43rd Annual Festival of India – July 18-19, 2015
Arts & Culture Showcase
Centre Island, Toronto

The 43rd Annual Festival of India, which will be celebrated on Centre Island from July 18-19, 2015, once again proudly presents its unique Arts & Culture Showcase, a beautiful and soul-riveting programme of powerful dance, drama and devotional music from the ancient subcontinent. Rain-or-shine, in a tented, outdoor venue and amidst a giant summer festival, this show grants audiences a free ticket to observe the spiritual allure and the creative elegance of dramas, melodies, and choreography that were once commonplace in ancient, spiritual India.

With a line-up of international and local artists, the program promises a unique and unforgettable collection of sublime sounds and enchanting performances. Some of this year’s performances include:

  • “Journey of the Soul” – A Fusion Dance Piece
  • Pure Fashion Showcase – Presenting the Dress of Spiritual India
  • Live Art Show – Two Artists Painting Live with Musical Accompaniment
  • Traditional Dance – Presented by the Bhakti Kalalayam Dance Academy
  • Drama – Theatrical Performances of Beautiful Stories of Krishna
  • Kirtan – Incredibly Sublime Musical Mantra Meditation

Experience Kirtan!
The 43rd Annual Festival of India’s Arts & Culture extravaganza will be showcasing traditional and modern forms of a devotional music style known as kirtan. In recent years, word about this form of music has been spreading and developing into its own subculture and modern indie music scene. At the Festival of India, audiences will be able to experience kirtan performances by a number of classically-trained local and international kirtan musicians and bands. Traditional South Asian instruments and mantras together with contemporary sounds and rhythms will burst forth into ecstatic, new musical experiences that must be heard to be believed!

About Festival of India
The Festival of India also features a vibrant parade down Yonge Street on Saturday, July 18th, with celebrations continuing on Toronto’s beautiful Centre Island for the remainder of the weekend. Aside from the Arts & Culture Showcase, festival-goers will find a massive, colourful and free festival, featuring a South Asian bazaar, Vedic exhibits, a children’s area, face-painting, and our world-famous FREE vegetarian feast! On Sunday, July 19th, the Festival will also present the Seventh Annual Yoga Meltdown – a “festival within a festival” – focusing on presenting the spiritual depth of yoga and much more!
