SAVAC Announcements — March/April 2012
Dear Members,
We hope that you are well, and enjoying the warmer weather. After a successful screening of Monitor 8 at Innis Town Hall last week, we bring you three opportunities to get involved with SAVAC.
1 — SAVAC is looking for a Communications & Outreach Coordinator. If you have HTML skills, are a pro at managing multiple databases, and have experience with Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign, please review our guidelines for applying. Also note the extended deadline (Monday, April 2, 2012, 5:00 PM)
2 — Please join us for an information session about granting programs offered by the Ontario Arts Council, including ‘Exhibition Assistance’ grants for which SAVAC is a recommender. This program is presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of Mississauga. (Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 6:30 PM)
3 — An open call for submissions for SAVAC’s 2012 Members’ Group Show. This year the show will be at Gallery 1313 in Parkdale. This is a chance for our membership to show us what they have been working on. All mediums are welcome, including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, new media installations, and performance. (Deadline: Friday, April 20, 2012, 5:00 PM)
1 ‑ Communications & Outreach Coordinator
Deadline: Wednesday, March 28, Monday April 2, 2012 at 5:00 PM
15-20 hours per week
Projected Start Date: Week of April 9, 2012
SAVAC requires a highly detail-oriented and dedicated Communication and Outreach Coordinator to join the staff to help continue the vital work of informing and engaging our membership and audiences.
Responsibilities will include
- Maintaining the website (updating images, text and graphics)
- Developing and managing content for social media (facebook, twitter, etc.)
- Maintaining membership, media and subscriber databases.
- Overseeing outreach programming, including developing content for and/or organizing professional development workshops.
- Liaising with media contacts for event promotion—In-house design as needed (business cards, post cards and graphics)
- Administrative tasks
Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelors degree, with emphasis on working skills and experience
- Mac proficiency (with experience in PC an asset) – Knowledge of HTML
- Knowledge of Adobe CS3 (Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator)
- Copy-editing skills
- Minimum 2 years experience in the non-profit arts sector
- Knowledge of issues and practices in the South Asian visual arts community an asset
Additional Information:
This is a 3-month interim contract position, with the potential for renewal.

2012 Members’ Group Show
SAVAC, in partnership with Gallery 1313, is pleased to announce an open call for SAVAC’s annual members’ juried group exhibition. The exhibition is a platform to showcase the broad range and scope of critically engaged artwork being produced by artists from SAVAC’s membership.
Deadline for proposals: 20 April 2012. 5:00 PM
SAVAC invites proposals for new and innovative artworks that explore current issues and ideas shaping South Asian identities and experiences. We encourage applications that engage a range of themes and critically examine contemporary art and culture.
Artists may submit proposals for completed works in all formats including painting, drawing, print-making, photography, sculpture, film, video, sound and new media installations. Performance and site-specific works are also encouraged.
The exhibition will take place at Gallery 1313 in July 2012.
Submissions will be juried by a guest jury, in consultation with SAVAC’s programming committee.
