Changes to the Dora Mavor Moore Awards
As has been reported regularly in the TAPA Communique, the Dora Review Committee has been working hard since November 2010 towards the following goal: to achieve widespread endorsement of a renewed Dora Awards Program in order to sustain and increase the prestige of the Awards so that the Doras provide maximum benefit to our community. They have been charged with examining the existing Dora Award Divisions, award categories, the voting structure, and the jury selection and composition. All TAPA members were invited to participate in the review process. TAPA hosted a series of Town Hall meetings for each of the Dora Divisions in order to assess where changes should be made to best address the evolving needs of our membership. TAPA members were invited to send up to two staff/core team members, as well as a “plus one”, who could be a performer, a designer, a Board member, or anyone from your community.
The Dora Review Committee assessed the information gathered from these meetings, and has prepared proposals on which the TAPA membership will be invited to vote. If passed, the proposed changes will take effect for the 2012-13 Dora season, commencing June 1, 2012. Please be advised the proposed changes for the new Dora Divisions and Categories will be sent to the TAPA membership for vote next week. This has been a huge and important undertaking and I wish to thank Committee Chair Allen MacInnis and all of the members of the Dora Review Committee for their hard work and commitment towards making the Dora Mavor Moore Awards the best that they can be! APASO Conference Registration Now Open!
I am also pleased to announce the APASO Conference Registration is open! Many of you are aware that TAPA is hosting the upcoming APASO Conference in Toronto. APASO is the Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations. At TAPA we have been meeting for many years with our fellow ASO’s (arts service organizations) who participate in the annual APASO Conference. APASO was founded almost 30 years ago when a group of organizations providing services to their performing arts communities got together to share their experiences as a way of learning from each other. Today APASO is an association that includes cross-disciplinary not-for-profit arts service organizations and cultural alliances from across North America (including New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Vancouver and others). We share many common goals, and many common passions drive our work. Almost all of us work to increase public awareness of, engagement with, and support for the arts in our local municipalities and we are membership driven.
TAPA is thrilled and honoured to be the host organization for APASO Toronto 2012 and we thank all of our sponsors and supporters and the financial assistance from the Ontario Arts Council. We are anticipating approximately 55 delegates from across North America. As you know, the current climate and financial challenges our industry faces are daunting. More than ever before, we need the solidarity of working cohesively together toward solving challenges, with the opportunity for exploration of new ideas and diversity. Youth Workshop Proposals for National Youth Arts Week
May 1-7, 2012
On behalf of the Arts Network for Children and Youth’s (ANCY) National Youth Arts Week, TAPA is inviting all TAPA Member companies to submit proposals for youth workshops. These workshops are to address any performing arts topics in order to engage groups of youth participants in Toronto’s theatre, dance and opera scene.

Indie Caucus Update by Richard Lee, Chair Indie Caucus and TAPA Board Member

This special, perhaps once in the lifetime event will be YOUR chance to meet with other Indie Producers, members of the Indie Caucus, people who eat, sleep and sweat theatre like yourself. The Indie Caucus has been very busy these past few months with many interesting and fabulous initiatives and projects coming down the pipeline.
Recently The Indie Caucus has been following the results of the Independent Theatre Review Committee (ITRC) at Canadian Actors Equity Association (Equity) and what potential changes this may mean for Indie Producers in the future. Equity has been very busy with a few big items of their own, so it was nice to see some movement being done by the Association. During the recent Equity National Annual General Meeting on February 27, a motion was brought forth by Ed Roy of Topological Theatre (a multi-Dora nominated Indie Company). U.N.I.T Productions
Morro and Jasp, Up your Nose and In your Toes (U.N.I.T.) Productions’ signature clown duo, have been lighting up Toronto audiences for years with their loveable and laughable antics. The “crowned queens of clown” (EYE Weekly) have also appeared in Montreal, Halifax, London, Edmonton, Winnipeg and New York City.
The result of five years of Pochinko-based clown performance training and experimentation, Morro and Jasp are the creation of performers/writers Heather Marie Annis and Amy Lee and director/dramaturg Byron Laviolette. Together, they are dedicated to helping people rediscover joy, truth and creativity, not as a passing moment but as an important part of everyday life, hoping to heal the world one smile at a time. Their work is intimate, immediate, inspired, and of course, interactive!
U.N.I.T. Productions has created eighth original new works, including their kids shows: Morro and Jasp GO GREEN and The Bully Show: Clown in the Round (a co-productions with Mixed Company Theatre), and their adult shows: Morro and Jasp do Puberty (nominated for a 2010 Canadian Comedy Award), Morro and Jasp Gone Wild (Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble NOW Magazine, Official Selection Amuse Bouche NYC) and Morro and Jasp: Go Bake Yourself (Sold out after two days at 2012 Next Stage Festival).
